What is intestinal obstruction?
Intestinal obstruction occurs when something gets stuck in the intestines. It can happen for many reasons, including eating too much food at one sitting, having an infection, or being pregnant.
Small Bowel Obstruction
A small bowel obstruction happens when part of the small intestine becomes blocked by something. This can cause severe pain and nausea. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as dehydration, malnutrition, and even death.
Large Bowel Obstruction
There are eight different types of intestinal obstructions. They are listed below along with some common symptoms and treatments.
Gastrointestinal Tract Obstruction
If you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
1. Abdominal pain
2. Vomiting
3. Nausea
4. Diarrhea
5. Constipation
6. Bloating
7. Difficulty swallowing
8. Blood in stool
Colonic Obstruction
A colonic obstruction occurs when something gets stuck inside the large intestine. This can happen because of an infection, cancer, or other problem with the digestive system. It can also occur as a result of a procedure such as surgery or childbirth.
Duodenal Obstruction
If there is a blockage in the duodenum, food will not pass through the intestines into the stomach. Instead, it will remain in the small intestine where it can cause serious damage.
