What is Meniere's Disease?
Meniere’ s disease (MD) is a very common inner ear disorder that affects approximately 1 million Americans each year. MD is characterized by episodes of severe vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, and sometimes nausea and vomiting. These episodes usually last less than 24 hours and occur at irregular intervals.
What Are the Symptoms of Meniere's Disease? What Causes it?
MD is caused by damage to the inner ear, specifically the vestibular system. This system helps us maintain our sense of balance and orientation. In MD, the vestibular system becomes damaged, causing dizziness, vertigo, and other symptoms. There are two main types of MD: episodic and progressive. Episodic MD occurs when there are sudden attacks of vertigo lasting between 30 minutes and 2 days. Progressive MD occurs when the symptoms gradually worsen over months or years.
What Are the Treatments for Meniere's Disease? Which Ones Work Best?
Treatment options for MD vary based on the type of MD a patient has. If a patient experiences episodic attacks, medications like betahistine (Betaseron) and diuretics (water pills) can help reduce the frequency of episodes. If a patient has progressive MD, treatment options include surgery, medication, and/or lifestyle changes. Surgery involves removing part of the inner ear to prevent further damage. Medications used to treat MD include betahistine, diuretics, and antidepressants. Lifestyle changes include avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and stress.
