    What does narcissist mean?

     

    Narcissists often think that they're better than others, and they tend to see themselves in a positive light. They also believe that other people should serve them, and they expect special treatment.

    A narcissist's self-esteem is very high, so he or she tends to feel superior to others. He or she has an inflated sense of his or her own importance and talents. Narcissists are usually highly intelligent, charming, and good at manipulating others.

     

    Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)

    NPD is characterized by a grandiose sense of self-importance, extreme preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love, and lack of empathy for other people. People who suffer from NPD often believe that they are special and deserve special treatment. They also tend to be arrogant, demanding, and exploitative.

     

    The Five Characteristics of NPD

    There are five characteristics of NPD:

    1) Grandiosity – A narcissistic individual believes he/she is superior to others. He/she has an inflated view of his/her own importance and talents.

    2) Self-absorption – This individual focuses only on himself/herself and what he/she wants.

    3) Arrogance – Narcissists think highly of themselves and consider others beneath them.

    4) Entitlement – Narcissists expect others to cater to their every need.

    5) Exploitation – Narcissists use others to meet their needs.

     

    Signs You May Be a Narcissist

    If you recognize yourself as being a narcissist, there are some things you should do to help yourself. First, you must admit that you have a problem. Second, you must seek treatment. Third, you must learn how to manage your behavior so that it doesn’t affect other people. Fourth, you must work hard at changing your personality. Finally, you must take responsibility for your actions.

     

    Treating Narcissists

    A narcissist has an inflated sense of self-importance and believes he/she is superior to others. They often lack empathy and tend to exploit others. In addition, they are usually very demanding and critical of others.
