Methods Used in the Treatment of Prostate Cancer
After prostate cancer is diagnosed, which is definitively diagnosed with a prostate biopsy, we have 4-5 treatment methods. One of these treatment methods and very important in early diagnosis is radical prostatectomy surgery, which we call "prostate cancer surgery". Radical prostatectomy surgery, unlike normal prostate surgery, is a technique in which the entire prostate is removed and this is done with laparascopic, robotic or open methods.
Therefore, it is a treatment method that we apply in early diagnosed, stage 1, stage 2 cases. Again, the surgical technique, which we call "nerve sparing technique", is seen as an important surgical technique, especially in patients with an active sexual life.
Our second treatment is hormonal treatment, which we call hormonal treatment, which we apply in patients who are a little more advanced or who have gone beyond the prostate. Apart from hormonal treatment, our third treatment is radiotherapy, which is also a treatment method we apply in prostate cancer.
Who do we apply radiotherapy to? Direct radiotherapy to the prostate is a treatment method that we apply in patients who are caught at an early stage, who do not want surgery or who are prevented from undergoing surgery due to other diseases, of course, this can be done with different methods under itself.
Again, we have stage 3 cases where these are combined, that is, hormonal treatment and radiotherapy are performed together. In other words, these can also be applied together. Again, in stage 4 cases, only hormonal treatment is applied, as well as Orchiectomy, which is an alternative to hormonal treatment, are treatments that can be performed.
Of course, what we know here, especially in advanced prostate cancers, in a prostate cancer that has jumped to other organs with an elevated PSA, our aim with treatment is to reduce the PSA to zero values.
Initially, with all of these treatments, the PSA drops rapidly, but then it starts to rise again. In the case of hormone refractory period, chemotherapy is also a treatment method we apply in prostate cancers.
Again, a treatment method called lutetium-177, which we have recently applied, is also a treatment model that can be applied in advanced stages of prostate cancer.
